Ólöf Erla Bjarnadóttir is a ceramic designer who works mainly with porcelain. She graduated from The Icelandic School of Arts and Crafts in 1982. Since then she‘s had nine solo exhibitions and participated in various group exhibitions both in Iceland and abroad. She has received many grants, worked on official projects and held lectures. She is also an experienced teacher and has been the head of the Ceramic Department of The Reykjavik School of Visual Arts since 2007.
The main challenges of her works are often tributes to old traditions that are mulled over and then updated for today‘s world. She appropriates textures and decorations from the past, and using other materials, transfers the work to the present. She creates objects that combine function and aesthetics.
